Glass houses

This is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said that women don't deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men
-- Hillary Clinton

I was going to say something extremely rough to Hillary, to her family, and I said to myself, I can't do it. I just can't do it. It's inappropriate. It's not nice
-- Donald Trump, discussing his performance on CNN after the debate

- Mr. Trump has never treated women the way Hillary Clinton and her husband did when they actively worked to destroy Bill Clinton's accusers
- Hillary Clinton bullied and smeared women like Paula Jones, Gennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinsky
- Are you blaming Hillary for Bill's infidelities? No, however, she's been an active participant in trying to destroy the women who has come forward with a claim
--
Talking points circulated by the Trump Campaign this week, advising supporters on how to bring up former president Bill Clinton’s sex scandals in the wake of Trump’s failure to do so during the first Trump/Clinton Debate

Donald Trump bragged about his “restraint.”

His restraint, he says.

Restraint.

Trump boasted of his restraint.

Out loud. Trump actually claimed great restraint, as if that’s a trait he actually has.

You’ll pardon me for a moment?

OK. Sorry about that. I think I’ve got it under control.

So, Donald Trump says he showed great restraint by not bringing up Bill Clinton’s extramarital affairs during last Monday’s debate.

I mean, he would have, he wanted to, but he managed to restrain himself.

Because it was the the right thing to do.

Because dignity and class and like that, those are the traits Trump is known for.

That’s Donald Trump for you, restrained and modest. Everybody says so. You betcha.

I …

What? Oh, now you need a moment? Sure. It’s a new rug, don’t want any accidents. Take all the time you need.

Good? OK.

Now where was I?

Oh, yes, so then, naturally, Trump being Trump he’s spent the last three days telling everybody he can about his heroic manly restraint (it’s huge, folks, YUGE) and openly encouraging his supporters to bring up Bill Clinton’s extramarital affairs.

This is nothing particularly new for Trump. He’s the guy who encouraged Russia to hack Clinton’s email – jokingly, of course, joking, we’re just joking – and coyly suggested gun nuts might win the race for conservatives if they were to, you know, provide some Second Amendment solutions with regards to Hillary Clinton, wink wink, kidding again of course, kidding, because there just isn’t anything funnier than jokes about murdering a woman who annoys you. Especially when you’re trying to prove how you’re not a rampaging hard-on of a misogynist.

Of course he’s also the guy who hid from military service in some rich kid prep school while he encouraged others to go fight and die in a foreign land.

Prompting his fans to do his dirty work instead of soiling his own hands is pretty much his whole brand.

I digress.

So, Trump boasted of his restraint.

And, being Donald Trump, he then spent three days lamenting that he didn't go after Hillary Clinton by bringing up Bill Clinton's infidelities during the debate. Because Clinton "ambushed" him with Alicia Machado – the former Miss Universe who Trump called "Miss Piggy" for her weight gain.

Trump says he was taking the high road.

But he’s acting like the oafish jock who thinks up a lame comeback … a day after he got humiliated in public by the class brainiac and keeps trying to find a conversation where he can use it. Yeah, why don’t you make like a tree and get out of here? Huh?

Trump was taking the high road by not throwing Bill Clinton’s infidelities in Hillary Clinton’s face?

Not exactly a bold move from a guy who cheated on his first wife with his second wife and cheated on his second wife with his third wife.

He also seems to think that fat shaming women is OK, so long as you do it in volume and as such he’s spent the last three days publically naming a list of women he considers fat and unattractive as justification for calling a woman fat and unattractive.

One day in the distant future students of logic will refer to this as the Trump Tautology.

In the days since the debate, prominent republicans have rushed to Trump's support.

Men such as Newt Gingrich.

Newton Leroy Gingrich, a man who married his high school geometry teacher when he was 18 (and really, no creepy factor there, right, Conservatives? Nooo), then cheated on her (while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer) with the woman who would become his second wife. Then cheated on his second wife with his third wife – while at the same time attempting to impeach Bill Clinton for lying about having an extramarital affair. All of which, somehow says something bad about Hillary Clinton’s character, I guess. Apparently. Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

This tactic was so successful for Newt that it got him booted from office and made Bill Clinton into one of the most popular presidents in recent history.

But, yeah, Trump should listen to this guy, because Newt, he’s what Republicans nowadays consider an intellectual.

And in to further cement his intellectual credentials, Newt just had to weigh in on fat chicks. Last night during the annual Republican Spirit of Lincoln Dinner, SPIRIT OF LINCOLN DINNER BAWAHAHAH …

Sorry, won’t happen again.

… Newt opined publicly Trump was right about Miss Universe, Alicia Machado. Seems she really was a fatty and Trump had every right to fire her for being a huge giant enormous fat pig. Oink Oink.

But hey, that’s just Newt being Newt – the guy who ditched his older wife dying of cancer for a fresh perky newer model.

It’s not like all of Trump’s …

What?

Who?

Oh. Of course.

Today, Rudy Giuliani chimed in, saying the Bill Clinton “disgraced” the country with his affairs.

Rudy Giuliani, the man who "accidentally" married his cousin despite knowing her his entire life and then petitioned the Roman Catholic Church for a divorce while he was cheating on her with his second wife.  And then – Goddamn but these people are so predictable – Rudy cheated on his second wife with his third wife. But only after having an affair with his communications director in an apartment maintained at New York City taxpayer expense.

Maybe it's just me.

Gingrich yesterday floated a new conspiracy theory, one that is now raging out of control on social media and in the press, spread by conservatives desperate to salvage something, anything, from Trump's miserable performance on Monday night.

According to Gingrich, the Clinton Campaign for months planned the "Machado Trap."

Yes, that’s right, the Machado Trap.

See according to the theory, during the debate, Trump – classy gentleman that he is – was taking the high road of intellect and reason, going easy on the girl, considerate of her health I guess. Trump was shocked, given his restraint, when Clinton desperate and on the ropes from Trump's well reasoned and deliberate performance sprung her ambush at the last minute. Trump, according to the conspiracy theory, restrained gentleman that he is, was so shocked by Clinton’s unfair sucker punch that it tricked him into accidentally blurting out Rosie O'Donnell's name instead of Monica Lewinsky.

Or something like that.

The details are a little hazy, but the long and short of it is: Clinton tricked Trump into acting like a loutish misogynist.

Newt didn’t describe how his theory accounts for Trump’s “restraint” first inviting and then disinviting Gennifer Flowers to the debate.  You know, if he wasn’t gong to bring it up.

But let’s not let details ruin a good conspiracy theory or derail Newt’s promising political comeback, shall we?

Given Hillary Clinton's aggressive take no prisoners performance, the Trump camp should be damned glad he didn't bring up Bill Clinton's infidelity.

Oh, yes, they should give thanks for his “restraint” indeed.

First, because it was Bill's infidelity and not Hillary's.

And when you're the guy who's got a string of affairs and broken marriages in your wake and who spends a lot of time calling women fat pigs, it might be a tactical mistake to attack a woman for her husband's infidelity. Especially when your campaign already spends a significant fraction of its time telling everybody you’re not a howling misogynist, really truly you’re not.

Second, Clinton would have eaten him alive.

Look how she handled his comments about her email. That was supposed to be Trump’s big moment, his gotcha moment all the pundits would be talking about for days. But instead she brushed his comments aside with the practiced ease of somebody who faced down a congressional witch hunt without breaking a sweat or even raising her voice. And in three days since, nobody has mentioned Trump’s big moment. Nobody. Just as nobody buys into the nonsense Trump somehow wasn’t really a birther, but was engaged in masterful brinksmanship – even his friends think that’s pretty lame.

So, Bill Clinton screwed around?

What? Does Trump honestly think mention of it would, what? reduce Hillary Clinton to a puddle of sobbing lady tears?

Really?

No, of course not. Just as in that list of talking points above, Trump’s Campaign hopes to use Bill Clinton’s infidelity and Hillary’s subsequent decision to salvage her marriage as evidence that Hillary Clinton is some kind of traitor to her sex.

Gentlemen, as a fellow man I would suggest to you that might be a bad tactic.

And really, don't you think for one damned second Hillary Clinton – Hillary Rodham Goddamned Clinton – wasn't ready for that?

Hell, how could she not be?

Trump thinks he is some master poker player, but you don’t advertise your trump card by inviting it to sit in the front row.

What, you think Clinton didn’t notice the Gennifer Flowers bit?

C’mon. You strain my already sprained credulity.

Hell, based on the evidence, I'd say she was hoping Trump would bring it up and, like a matador twitching her cape to enrage the dumb bull, she was very likely holding her sword just out of sight.

She’s had twenty years to prepare for that exact attack. She was goading him into it and smiling all the while.

Trump can snort and paw at the ground, but he is lucky, damned lucky, he didn't make the final charge considering his own history.

Clinton would have brought him down like a bad side of beef, bank on it.

But let's say it's true.

Let's say Newt is right. Sure. Let’s give Newt this one. He’s had a shitty couple of decades since he was thrown out of office, let’s be generous.

Let's say Clinton planned that ambush.

Let's say the Clinton campaign looked at Trump, analyzed his weaknesses, his bluster and bravado, his utter inability to ignore a barb or a taunt, his inability to control his ego or his temper or his mouth, his weakness around women, his infidelities.

Let’s say they then designed the Machado Trap with malice aforethought.

And he fell for it.

Even Gingrich admits Trump fell right into it.

Trump as much as admits it himself.

He fell for it. And for the last three days he’s kept falling for it.

Now, can you imagine this guy, a man so easily led into ambush, leading America?

In the end, this is what we have:

An unprepared amateur who substitutes bluster and bombast for actual substance and preparation.

Or a professional of intellect and wit who’s been preparing for this moment her entire life.

Those are your choices.

Make of them what you will.

I think Donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. And, yes, I did. You know what else I prepared for? I prepared to be President.

  1. Funny how lines like that last one during the debate got her called "smug" by Trumpites, but his bluster, interruptions and rudeness were called "confident" and "passionate."

But there's no double standards being applied in this campaign, right? Oh, right...I'm just trying to "deflect" again....lol

We may lip service to hypocrites in Congress and slimy rascals like Newt and Rudy, but we are not ready to let them back into the halls of power. Tell about someone by the company they keep is a good indicator. Jim, you named some of the Trump pack and they are indeed a pack of liars and scoundrels. Good essay.

I mean, uh, no! That's wrong! See, when Trump is in the White House, no one would dare to strategically lay a trap for him to walk right into. No one! Not North Korea, or China, or Russia! They wouldn't dare! They'd be too scared after how Hillary tried it and it backfired...

    2. I don't pray often these days, but I am considering it. Please, Donald Trump, bring up the fact you can't abide any woman with an ounce of fat on her body. Keep bringing it up until the next debate, and bring it up a few times during. The average American woman wears a size 16-18 now. In other words, many of 52% of the electorate aren't thin, and there's nothing wrong with that. Every time Trump runs his mouth about it, though, those women hear the taunts they endured in childhood. They remember every time they were reminded by an ex-husband or boyfriend that they could "lose a few pounds", or every time a frenemy said, "But your face is so pretty." Those women will RUN to their polling places on November 8th, and Donald, I'll laugh as I watch women you would scorn, belittle and emotionally abuse have the ultimate revenge on you.

      Delete
    3. Trump also he said "She deserved it" about his Rosie O'Donnell comments. Every woman who has heard that phrase from an abuser can fight back against this one on November 8 (or sooner if early voting is available in your state.

  5. I find him totally unacceptable as a human being much less a qualified candidate for office. And as contemptible as this is it pales in comparison to his remarks in Florida where he called to the crowd for a show of hands as to who was not a "conservative Christian" so they could remove them from the rally. So if you were a Jew or Mormon or Muslim or anything other than a "conservative Christian" you were not welcome. If that's not a clear signal as to what this "movement" is all about I don't know what would be.

I agree that we may be seeing another perfect storm...and it floors me. Too many people forget that Hitler rose out of a democracy. Silence is not an option. My mother-in-law lived through this once as a child and I can only imagine her horror right now.

Women should always be (and have always been) held to a different "standard." When he does bring this up at the next debate - a town hall - I hope all the women in the audience stand up and start throwing stones.

I'm continually amazed at the number of people who tell me they don't like HRC but when I ask them to describe what it is they don't like about her, first they respond to me with shock that I would dare to ask them such a silly question then they say stuff like ... well, you know, it's how she looks, how she laughs, how she smirks, how she dresses, how she waves her hands around and also she's too loud. (Oddly these are the exact same reasons the exact same people say they hate Elizabeth Warren. Hmmmm). And OMG - emails! E-MAILS!! I don't know what about e-mails but Lock Her UP! BENGHAZI !

They know all about Benghazi but never heard of all the US embassy bombings during the Bush administration or about the 240 Marines killed in their barracks or the Iran-Contra affair - and the list goes on. And I just talked to friend on the day after the debate who knows with absolute certainty that HRC has either epilepsy or Parkinsons becasue they saw a video clip of her having some sort of seizures. And the kicker is this friend of mine has been a god-damned emergency room RN for the past 40 years. And then there was the audience on the Dr. OZ show who actually cheered with great approval on hearing what Trump's Testosterone level was (btw it was borderline low which is the usual plight of 70 year old men). They appauded. Take that in, won't you. They cheered! Because he has testosterone. And the folks I watched the debate with thought HRC looked like she was "failing" and "running out of gas" to which I replied I just wasn't picking up on that. They said I just didn't want to admit it was because I'm liberal. Yep, I'm living in a parallel universe. I'm sure of it. Jim, I suspect you don't need (or even appreciate) readers suggesting topics for you but the echo chamber casued by only being exposed to like-minded political views is going to be, if not the dowfall of this nation at least something that casuses us great harm.

  51. Okay, Trump. Go ahead. Suggest to the women (and decent men) of America that a wronged wife is terrible if she doesn't fall all over herself to be warm and friendly and supportive of her husband's mistresses.

  54. When they first mentioned it, they tried to spend that he "read" the room and realized it would be a bad move. Nope, I think his son, daughter or Pence told him not to fire that shot. Also, eluding to not saying it is not restraint. It's a passive aggressive move that let's Hillary know she was right to prepare for him to bring it up. She's expecting it now. His campaign realized she cannot be shaken. Through all the interruptions, blustering and lies, she still presented her platform in a clear and concise manner.

What they are trying to deflect from is Trump's ignorance. Hillary pulled his pants down and smacked his behind well. I laughed so hard when he was asked about changing the US's nuclear protocols. He didn't answer the questions and couldn't answer the question because he has no clue what the protocols are. Everyone of his answers was regurgitation of his stump speech. On live tv for the world to see, he showed he's clueless. The hens are coming home to roost. There's no way to hide this. His plan was to float through the general election. If he wins, he can appoint people and let them make all his decisions. They will give him prompt speeches and keep him out of the press room as much as possible. That's not going to work anymore. He's been exposed. Everyone knows the emporer's new clothes are a hoax. The question now is, how can anyone still vote for him?

  55. Watching from across the ocean, I am somewhat staggered;

For 25 years republicans have made Hillary Clinton one the most, if not the most investigated person in the US, including 11 hour session of interrogation, and various violations of the Hatch act, to take her down.
Amount of evidence that would hold up in court of actual wrongdoing=0

On the other side. you have an individual who refuses to comply with a simple credit check to ensure he is not in Putins pocket, and who has 3500 lawsuits for fraud, one of child rape, and 1-2 of bribing public officials to drop criminal cases against him, and that is just at this very moment.

In many very important respects, Hillary Clinton will be vastly better than Trump -- She would sign a bill providing for full transparency of donors to any organization engaging in any form of political activity; she would nominate people to the Supreme Court who would overturn Citizens United and who would not overturn Roe v Wade; she would not sign a bill overturning the Johnson amendment (look it up); she will try to obtain tax reform that closes loopholes and she won't sign bills giving more huge tax cuts to the 1%; she can actually find Aleppo on a map and has foreign policy experience and she would not randomly use nukes because she felt that someone somewhere slighted her. 60. It is a prime example of the simple-mindedness and the male ego at play in Trump's expectation that mentioning Bill Clinton's extra-marital affairs will get under Hillary Clinton's skin. A couple of score years ago, I became the ex-wife of a serial philanderer. I put some effort into trying to repair the marriage but he wasn't willing so I ended it and never looked back. When life hands you tough decisions, even heartache, you have two choices. If you hang onto the grievances and the pain, those will control your life. If you choose to let go of them, you have freedom to make new choices, a new life. I did that, Hillary Clinton did that. We are better women for making that decision.

  66. I am a little bothered by this aspect of Hillary's comment: "This is a man who ... has said that women don't deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men."

Is she suggesting that a woman (or man) who does an inferior job should get the same pay as someone who does a better job at the same position/level? I think she needs to clarify that statement.

However, the rest of the post, spot on. What's egregious about Rudy ("9/11!") Guiliani is that he announced his separation from his second wife at a press conference, before he told her, and then he paraded his mistress about town as though she were NYC's first lady before he was divorced.

    2. Hillary Clinton has a been a powerful woman in what is traditionally a man's world for her entire adult life. Lawyer, politician, she has fought against the glass ceiling at every turn. Her thoughts on this subject are very clear and a matter of record and I think you both can rest assured that she meant women deserve equal pay for equal work. She been fighting for equal rights her entire life.

      Delete
    3. I, too, think that sentence looks awkward when written, but it was spoken, not written, so you have to look at her overall, consistent stance on equal pay.

There should have been a better way to point out that some people (people like, apparently, Trump) feel that ANY work a woman performs will, of course, be inferior that that performed by a man, but if they are doing the same job to the standards expected, they should get the same pay, if one or the other is doing a better job, that person should be eligible for a raise at review time, regardless of gender. (Of course, I just WROTE a paragraph, and it would have taken three or four times as long to say something like that as compared to what she did say.)

      Delete
    4. Since women have always had to do a better job than men to get a lower amount of pay, Trump was implying (rather inelegantly) that women have never done a job as well as any man has done. And he didn't believe that any woman would ever do a job as well as a man.

Anyway back in the day I was all supportive if HRC walked out on Bill. However then I thought she didn't stop loving him and at that time she was FLOTUS and leaving him would devastate anything he was trying to do as POTUS -- the GOP would pounce and later blame them both for bringing "shame" to the country and world -- it never matters what the Clinton's do -- the GOP will make it evil either way. She chose to stay and that is her decision - Trump's ex-wives all signed agreements never to say a word against him in order to get hefty alimony checks. He doesn't believe in freedom of expression with ex-wives or employees - including those in his campaign. They are not allowed to speak about any Trump family member or risk being sued. Marlene

Sometimes she just pointed at the hole, and he went and jumped in on his own. Sometimes she only had to hand him the shovel, and he dug his own hole. And then there were times he found his own shovel...

His supporters moaned about the whole format. Now imagine it isn't a TV format. Imagine him face to face in actual negotiations- the 'grewat deal maker'. Imagine him with a certain frumpy hausfrau. Merkel will eviscerate him. You'll need a clean up crew and 3 body bags.

  81. Hillary Clinton is bringing a book to a bar fight. I don't even think that Trumps response should get any attention. The angry attention he gets feeds the determination and hatred of his supporters. Of course it is ridiculous, we don't even need to say it. An eye roll and face slap is all the response that he should get. Before we get all angry at everyone else, I think the anger, clearly, needs to be solely directed at the Media. This is the media's fault. This is not Jill Steins fault, not Bernie Sanders fault., not even Gary Johnson's fault although I dont think he is sober enough to be president. If you are high all the time.....well that is another argument for another article. The media bares the burden of responsibility for this. Having said that, Trump is aiming his arguments at emotion, Hillary is aiming her argument at the intellectual level. Emotion always resonates before reason. Everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Of course we want our candidates to prepare and be qualified, but qualifications is not how Trump got here. He got here because of his ball busting attitude. I feel like this is all a bet and he bet someone that he could win the Presidency solely on doing everything that your not supposed to do. She can prepare and loose. Or she can trade jabs with him, and still loose, simply because he is more charismatic than she is. I am not voting for either of them. I know that that is not a popular stance on this forum, but that is my choice. Thank you for your post :)

With all the fracas going on right now over Donald Trump's recorded quotes and ham handed apology, I have heard speculation on replacing him on the Republican ticket, and some people think it's too late because voting has already started. It's worth remembering that we are not voting directly for the candidate we want, but for electors to cast their ballots when the Electoral College meets. I don't really know if that Republican nominee has to be Donald Trump.

  88. I share your concern and will certainly NOT vote for trump.

Under normal circumstances, it's perfectly reasonable to give the conservatives a crack at running the country every few years. After all, there are two sides to every political issue.

However, there are no normal circumstances in this election. Trump could VERY POSSIBLY lead us into a nuclear war. Voting for this man would not only be DANGEROUS, but immoral as well. NEVER...

    1. I have come to the conclusion that why these (especially evangelicals) are DESPERATE for the Trumpeter to win IS they actually WANT America and the world to go up in flames in a nuclear holocaust, because they realize Jesus is not, ever going to come back .... And they are pissed.

    2. well....when Jesus does come back these evangelicals are going to have a whole lot to teach Him about christianity, apparently He had it all screwed up.

  89. Another great post highlighting the hypocrisy of the "traditional family values" Party which now is wholeheartedly supporting a man on his third marriage who boasts about sexually assaulting women and ogling teenaged pageant contestants. A man who judges women by their looks and how much he would like to sleep with them. A man who talked about moving on a married woman "like a bitch" while he was on his third marriage. The contest between Secretary Clinton and Trump shouldn't even be as close as it is in the polls.

Trump has displayed much restraint in only one area: acting like a decent, mature human being.

  90. That essay should be delivered as stand-up-comedy ala George Carlin! I haven't laughed that much in a long time.
But, alas, this not comedic. It is the reality of this extremely long, and insane, Presidential campaign.
Given this reality, we still need a good laugh now and then.
