Rondy 2012

We spent the day in Anchorage at the Fur Rendezvous.

This is my favorite time of year and one of the things I dearly love about living in Alaska.

During Rondy, the streets of downtown Anchorage are filled with the smell of wood smoke and good food and the crisp cold Alaskan winter.  The sound of happy people and excited dogs echoes off the buildings. And the streets are filled with snow.

And in a week, it’s the Iditarod (those of you outsiders who think you know something about the Iditarod, think again, it’s one of the greatest stories in Alaskan American, history).

I spent the day taking pictures. Here are some of my favorites:

And we finished up with lunch at the Snow Goose and Sleeping Lady Brew House, complete with a coffee sludge.

An altogether excellent day to be an Alaskan.

  1. Dudes in burnt orange (Hook 'em Horns) Snuggies or Hare Krishnas in their winter wraps?

Looks like a very fun event--thanks for the great pictures!

  2. These are the posts of yours that I love most. Alaska, colorful, historic, not what the lower 48 thinks it knows about your state. Thanks for the pics!

    1. I know several folks who have either taken Alaskan cruises or have taken the motorhome to Alaska, and I have never heard any of them say anything but what a gorgeous place it is! I love seeing the pictures, too, and they validate what my friends say.

  3. Jim,

Been there (5 times) from Texas no less, and loved it. Wish to hell I could do it one more time. Thanks for the photos.

  5. I covet those horses and their tack but especially the driver's hat.

Photos of dog noses are always cool.

  6. Love love LOVE that picture of the dog going into the box. Beautiful, unorthodox exposition of an athlete.

  7. The pic of the Doberman took me by surprise. Aren't temps like you get in February very unpleasant for a dog without a bit of polar bear in his DNA strand?

    1. That's not a doberman, though it does kind of look like one from that angle. That's a racing sled dog, he's well insulated even though it might not look like it.

    2. Huh! I think it was the hind legs that threw me off, but my brother is the dog-identifier of the family. Thanks for the quick reply!

  8. The pic of the Doberman was suprising. Aren't temps in February unpleasant for a dog without a very thick fur coat?
