Well, it snowed this weekend, and you know what that means.
Yep, intermittent cable service.
Currently we're in backup mode, that's where we bundle the trons up and carry them to the servers via dogsled, one at a time. Through the snow. Up hill, both ways.
So, if you don't see me for the rest of the day, that's where I am. It has nothing to do with the LHC, I swear.

Update: I've spoken to my ISP's service department, they are aware of the problem and working on it. I'm still getting intermittent service disconnects and intermittent bandwidth restrictions. However, service does seem to be improving and the service department's response this time is significantly better than the last time I had a problem - which may have something to do with the note they have in my file.
Anyway, until this stabilizes I'm going to refrain from posting.
This actually works out for me, because I need to put the chains and plows on the ATV's instead of fooling around in the internet. It snowed a couple of inches last night and winter is upon me.
See you later this afternoon.
Big liar. We all know it's the LHC. After all, it came on line this summer, and Alaskan winters have only been going on for...
ReplyDeleteOh, wait...
He's gone!
ReplyDelete(rubs hands in glee)
Now where did I leave that bottle of whiskey?
(plops down on sofa and puts feet up)
A perfect end to my vacation!
Say, where'd Jim go? He was here a minute ago, then we got noise in the line and he faded in an out like the Darth Sideous in the first the episodes of Star Wars. Damn this telephony holographic devices.
ReplyDeleteWill somebody in Washington please tell the Alaskans that their string and tin-cans are on the ground and they better pick them up.
Hey Jim, when you're done hauling electrons, I'd like your input on a military post I wrote.
ReplyDelete:)
Done, and it took three tries because of my lousy connection.
ReplyDeleteAnd make sure you people are wiping your feet off before you go tramping though my liquor cabinet - somebody left snowy footprints all over the den.
:::beady eye pointed at Michelle:::
Steve - the irony is that I work for Jim's telco and I live in WA. ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd while we have $90M worth of satellite in the air, and $100M worth of redundant undersea fiber, we just can't manage that last mile very effectively.
Rural Alaska is much worse. (Jim's area is not considered rural except by pundits who want to make Sarah Palin look folksy.)
Hey, Jim, go sweep the snow out of your dish and break the ice shell off your external network interface box. Then spin three times counterclockwise and light a purple candle to exorcise the nargles from your lines.
If that doesn't work call support. If your cell service is still working. ;)
Jeri, they're on it. Just the usual first freeze issues, combined with some kind of Wasilla server problem. The server issue appears resolved, but I think my local amp is flaky
ReplyDeleteLike, I said though, they're on it. And it's getting better.
Is it my fault you've got all this awesome snow up and here all I have is lousy 70 temperatures?!
ReplyDeleteNope. The snowy footprints were mine. I hate wiping my feet before I come inside...

Well, since the LHC is down and we're in a solar minimum period, the only answer I've got is teeny tiny ninja terrorists in the wiring. Because I've got them, too. DSL stopped working at 11:30 last night. Renewing my Internet connection, rebooting, and rebooting the DSL modem didn't work. Came home and eventually turned off the whole UPS on the router stack, and then started over. Works now.
ReplyDeleteNinja terrorists. I wonder if Raid has a formula for that?
Dr. Phil
Things seem to be stable here, for the present anyway.
ReplyDeleteCable's up, and I've got full bandwidth. It's been in and out all day, and mostly out all weekend.
Midgets ninjas? Ha! There's only one proper response, midget Pirates. Avast, Pajama Heads, heave to and prepare to be boarded.
No fair. How come the black holes stay down your way?
ReplyDeleteGlad you weren't too affected by the wind the other day. It rained on Friday and last night we got about 3-4 inches of snow. Ah, winter...
(Michelle, I can't find the good beer. Where did you hide it? I know you didn't drink it!)
It's in the fridge. Check behind the giant bowl of chocolate pudding.
