Ah, spring in Alaska (officially called 'Breakup,' we don't actually experience the season most of you folks call 'spring').
It's 80F out, the grass is turning green, the leaves are budding out. The bears and squirrels have emerged from hibernation. The sky is blue and the birds are singing. What a glorious time.
OK, I started drinking early today.
I'm completely full of it, well mostly. Yesterday it was 60F (16C for those of you surfing in from Canada - eh you hosers there Ontario, British Columbia, and you there in Saskatchewan. Just for you, I'm wearing my raggedy old Canadian 'Roots' sweatshirt today). The grass is still brown and the leaves are still rolled up tight. The sky is bleak and gray and foreboding and it actually looks like this today, here in front of my shop.
They're predicting 9" of snowfall this weekend.
See? That's why I don't dismount the plows or pack up the snowblower until June.

Didja get the snowblower off the roof yet?
ReplyDeleteNaw, I like to keep it up there - where it's easier to throw frozen dog turds across onto my neighbor's roof.
ReplyDeleteHow do the frozen dog turds get up on my roof, you ask? Three words
Flying Sled Dogs.
Damn, you live in an exciting place.
ReplyDeleteCompared to New York? Well, yeah, I suppose...
ReplyDeleteI just figured with the snow depth you had to kennel them up there. Today it was in the 60s here and I did take our shovels to the shed out back. Tempting fate, I know, but you gotta live a little.
ReplyDeleteLast time I was there the car rental co gave me a car w/o windshield wiper fluid - which is actually a safety issue on breakup roads. I bought some and topped it up... and got a significant discount on the car upon my return.
ReplyDeleteEwww, I just had an awful thought. Thawing dog turds and a leaky roof... of course, I'm sure Casa Stonekettle is great repair and would not suffer roofing issues.
What's that little house on stilts? A treehouse that isn't in a tree?
ReplyDeleteI guess I'd be safe taking the snow shovel and bucket of sand/salt down to the basement now.
ReplyDeleteThis hoser from Ontario put out the patio furniture on the veranda yesterday. Yes I am tempting fate. OR rather my husband was, as it was HIS idea. He also started de-winterizing the backyard. he wanted to light the fire pit..but i told him he was taking it a little to far. After all, Hockey playoffs haven't even started yet.
ReplyDeleteMWT, exactly, that's a playhouse I built for my son. It's rather popular with the local kids.
ReplyDeleteKimby, yeah, you may be pushing your luck.
Nathan, never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never...." You're just begging for for a rickroll, aren't you?
And just for the record - there's a good four inches of snow out there this morning. Argh!
Jim, FOOM, Motherfucker!
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteI suppose it say something about where I live, that my initial thought was that was awfully close to the road for a tree-stand.
(sigh)
Well, that road is actually my driveway, the real road is way down there at the bottom of the hill. And I often have moose around the tree house, so you know, Michelle, you're not too far off.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a tree-stand too.
ReplyDeleteTree Stand, fire tower, meat cache, bungie jumping concession - play house. Whatever. It's Alaska.
ReplyDeleteMy dad built me and my siblings a little house on stilts like that when we were little too. More stable than an actual tree house.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's exactly what I thought too. Mored stable, safer - and it keeps the pests out of my trees :)
ReplyDeleteThere's also a large swing attached to one side (the right in the picture) with two swings and a tire swing. This year I'm going to enclose the bottom and make it into a bicycle garage and toy chest. I might add an escape pole.
Hee! That would be fun. We had a tire swing too. I miss it lots (it was my black steed!) and wish I had thought to photograph these childhood haunts before my parents sold the farm (as opposed to "buying" the farm ;).
ReplyDeleteoh my i love the place of yours :))
