It's that time of year

There were bears in the blueberry fields on Lazy Mountain yesterday. Just another sign that winter is on the way. In this part of Alaska, after salmon season, the bears move up into the berry fields trying to pack away enough calories for their winter hibernation. We have a lot of berry bushes on our property, cranberries, raspberries, and rosehips. I've seen black bear tracks in the mud on the trails behind our house, but so far we haven't had them in the yard.

This picture above is a fairly common joke around here.

  1. "Should carry little bells and pepper spray."

    Reminds me of.

"Black bear scat can be recognized by it's smaller size, the inclusion of berries and smells woody. Grizzly bear scat can be recognized by it's larger size, the inclusion of little bells and smells of pepper spray."

  2. Exactly, that's what the last line in the picture says, though it's a little hard to read.

  4. No worries.

Like I said above, it's a common joke around here. I've seen Alaskans say this entire bit to tourists in Denali word for word, completely deadpan and serious. Especially when the tourists are decked out in "bear bells" and pepper spray dispensers. Priceless.
