One of those days

Don't expect any long posts out of me for a day or so. I had a lathe chisel kick back at me today while turning. Not just any chisel, but the 2lb Sorby hollowing scraper. Hit me right across the knuckles of my left hand. I hit the kill switch on the lathe and turned off the shop dust collector system with my elbow before the pain and swelling started. I was pretty sure I'd broken at least one knuckle, maybe two. But, good news, they're just bruised - and swollen, and turning black and blue and yellow. And I got a pretty good cut on the index finger. No stitches, just a couple of butterflies and a bandaid.

Of course, this is the hand that I already have problems with, and hurts all the time. Of course it is. I'm typing one handed at the moment, so if my typing is even more crappy than usual, you know why. I've got my injured hand wrapped around a cold beer, that seems to be helping.

I heal fast though, and this isn't any big deal. Just the usual shop injury. I just may not feel like typing for a day or two. The management apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause you.

  1. You filed this under things you do for fun?

Perhaps you'd like a nice long trip back to the Dark Ages, so you can have even more fun!

    Sorry about your accident. Ouch!

  3. OUCH!

Damn it, now my fingers are going to hurt all day in sympathetic pain. Glad you didn't lose one.

My woodwork instructor makes it a sign of pride to show he still has all ten. And that this is the sign of a good woodworker, they have all their fingers. Sure, how well they work or feel is another matter all together, but using saws, sanders, jointers and planers, keeping all the flesh on is a good thing.

  4. Well, I've got all me fingers. Though the left index is still pretty swollen and black and blue this morning. I can bend it okay, slowly. And I can type, obviously, but slowly.

I was turning a wet greenwood birch burl, and maybe had the RPMs a little too high. I let the scraper drift just a little too far past the center point without the proper bracing grip (elbow locked, left hand on top) and it bucked against the tool rest and cracked me across the knuckles as I moved my hand just a little too late into the proper grip.

The good news is that I didn't damage the chisel scraper. This tool is a Robert Sorby, Sheffield Steel, made in the UK. Very expensive. I'd much rather damage myself than damage that tool.

  5. Yikes, Ouch, THANK GOODNESS you are doing ok.

I'll be offline during the day for at least another day, my office is being moved.

    Heal quickly and well.
