Off to Anchorage

Gone to Anchorage for the day. I promise you a profound, witty, interesting, and life changing post upon my return.

Enjoy your Saturday, I know I will, since I woke up and the headache was mostly gone. Woohoo!

In the mean time, watch this. The best dammed guitar player the human race has ever known. On the other hand, I have no idea what the video is all about, it's British - nobody gets it.

    Seriously?

I beg to differ. I give you John Petrucci, Joe Statriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, and Michael Hedges. Not to mention Stevie Ray.

Gifted, yes. Teh best damned guitar player the human race has ever known? Not so much.

  3. Have fun. The thought of "heading to Anchorage" for a day is a bit funny for me. It might as well be, "off to Olympus Mons" for a day. Which, apart from quick death from the elements, would be pretty awesome.

I guess death from exposure is a possibility in Anchorage too, but you know, it'd be a little more newsworthy on Mars. :)

And with that note, I should quit dreaming about sci-fi, and get back to my article, which is due Friday... Procrastination FTW!

Yeah, Janiece, especially the part where you typed "John Petrucci, Joe Statriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, and Michael Hedges. Not to mention Stevie Ray" where what you actually meant was "Mark Knopfler." It could happen to anybody, the keys are really close together. Don't worry, I know what you meant.

Shawn, well it was in the fifties today, so not much chance of dying from exposure - you could have drowned today though, it has been pouring since last night. It's the rainy season, it'll rain until it snows, which ought to be fairly soon. And I always visualized the Olympus Mons from Kim Stanley Ronbinson's Blue Mars to look a lot like the Chugach here in Alaska. On the drive in today it was shrouded in rain and fog, very mysterious, makes me look for dragons circling the heights.

  5. I haven't read the Mars series. It's on my bookshelf, but I haven't sunk my teeth in yet.

Winter is coming here too (not quite as soon), so hopefully I'll get to put in some serious reading time this snowy season.

  6. I've read Red, Green, and Blue Mars - haven't read the other related stuff he did. I enjoyed Red and Green, but Blue I just kept losing interest in. Had to force myself to finish it.

Winter is my reading time too.

  7. Oh, and I forgot to mention Yngwie Malmsteen. You'll notice that "Mark Knopfler" still isn't on the list. At least my list. :-)

  8. Well, there's no accounting for taste, Janiece. Don't be dissin' the Knopfler :-)

Seriously, though, there's something about Knopfler's music that I can't get enough of. I saw him play once, when he fronted Dire Straits, and the guitar-riff at the end of Sultans of Swing was utterly incredible. Knopfler's hands moved so fast that you could barely see his fingers, he was hitting notes that were as pure and clear as ruby laser light, and all the while he just stood there with this little smile on his face - like it was nothing.

But your guys are good too.

  9. It's always a pleasure to watch a virtuoso at work - whether you enjoy their style of music, or not.

I would highly recommend a CD called "An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess." It's a live set they did in NYC for charity, and bears little to no resemblance to their Dream Theater sound. Pure musical genius, both acoustic and electric.

    Bliss!

  10. Well, if you vet comments from 10 years into the future, I recommend you check out the late Rory Gallagher if you don't know his stuff. I won't get into debates about the "best" this or that, but I think you might find his virtuosity enjoyable.
